Anthony Gismondi, Gismondi on Wine - 90 points "In a world of cheap white wine, many with zero provenance, the Unsworth Auxerrois brings a little sanity to the picture. The even better news is it is less aggressive in terms of acid than many Island whites, lending it a more mainstream appearance. The vines were planted in the early 1990s at Zanatta vineyard, and they have been singing for two decades. Only a few barrels are made, but the bottle is worth pursuing. The wine is fermented wild and pitches plenty of inviting ripe melon. The palate is a mix of melons and yellow fruits with the perfect level of acidity that is almost soft without inhibiting the freshness of the wine. This is a terrific wine to pair with spaghetti and fresh butter clams, or a Margherita pizza. Ready to drink."

Tasting Notes
Ripe melon and windfall yellow apples fill the bouquet on the nose. On the palate this wine is dry with medium body supported by soft acidity and notes of cantaloupe, lilies and yellow apple.
Vineyard Notes
Zanatta was the first vineyard planted on Vancouver Island. The Auxerrois used for this wine was planted in the early 1990's and has become one of our favorite small production wines. The soils of Zanatta are a free draining sorted glacial till, meaning they don't hold water so the roots go deep, combine this with a terrific South facing gentle slope and it makes for very interesting wine.
Production Notes
With only a few barrels made, this is one of our smallest SKUs. This is a wine where our winemaking team feel uninhibited to create a wine outside of Unsworth's usual style. This particular wine underwent fermentation with solely ambient yeasts and was only treated with sulphur from that point on.
Food Pairing Notes
Auxerrois shows a little softer around the edges compared with most whites from the Cowichan Valley, it is fantastic with oily fish like mackerel, and smoked stugeron. If you like Chèvre or Fontina, you are in luck with this choice!
