Unsworth Vineyards

2022 Chardonnay

2022 Chardonnay

2022 marks our fouth release of Chardonnay which is certain to become a mainstay of the Unsworth Portfolio. The cool climate expression of this most noble grape is dry and poised on the palate with an elegant integration of fruit. In the glass it reveals complex notes of spice, nutty and chalky minerality. More thrilled we could not be at the addition of Chardonnay to our winery!

Anthony Gismondi – 92points "2022 was an 1126 degrees day growing season for this Cowichan Valley chardonnay in its fourth year of production. It mixes vineyards from Cowichan’s marine silts with unknown chardonnay clones. The winemaking is simple, with whole cluster press and ferment in French oak, but only 12% was new. Post ferment, it spends 15 months on its lees in the same barrels. At 12.5% alcohol, it is a rare bird among high quality chardonnays worldwide. 2022 is another electric version of this Island chardonnay, packed full of acidity and freshness, green apple, and lemons tempered by a fine creamy less and beautiful saline hazelnut underbelly, with a persistent mineral finish. The property is getting an adult million dollar facelift, and one wonders what can be done here from a state of the art facility. Salish Sea oysters are the magic match here."

Tasting Notes
Aromas of lime, lemon and green apple on the nose with a dry and poised palate with flavours of nashi pear, seashells and citrus zest on the palate. It is bright, subtle and complex with excellent texture and length.
Production Notes
Our third vintage of Chardonnay was gently whole cluster pressed to neutral French oak barrels for its fermentation and subsequent 15 months elevage before bottling.
Food Pairing Notes
The freshness and minerality of this Chardonnay makes it magic with dishes like Halibut in a rich savory curry, seared tuna with a tangy salsa or salad, and simple seafood like oysters on the halfshell.
