Our Story
A Family Beginning.
Unsworth Vineyards was founded by Tim and Colleen Turyk, who brought a lifetime of hospitality at home to a new venture in wine. Though not from the wine trade, the Turyk family life revolves around the kitchen table — Tim in the fishing industry, Colleen as a gifted home chef — where simple, well-prepared meals were shared with friends and neighbours. From those roots grew a vision: to create a place where guests would feel as welcome as they do in the family kitchen home.

Heritage Carried Forward
Tim and Colleen have deep ties to the Cowichan Valley, spending summers at nearby Shawnigan Lake, a community that has welcomed families for generations. It was during this time that Tim watched the region’s food and wine culture evolve from homespun beginnings into something remarkable. When the opportunity to purchase a small vineyard and early 1900s farmhouse came along in 2009, the Turyks saw the chance to create something special. The name Unsworth honours this family heritage — it was Tim’s mother Marjorie’s maiden name — grounding the winery in both family tradition and the spirit of the valley.
A sense of place
Nestled in the Cowichan Valley — celebrated by chef James Barber as “Canada’s Provence” — Unsworth is shaped by its coastal terroir. Rolling vineyards, ocean breezes, and a cool maritime climate give life to wines that are vibrant, balanced, and unmistakably of this place. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, sparkling Charme de l’île, and expressive whites form the heart of our portfolio — each a reflection of the valley’s unique character.
